Council Meeting: 11/28/00 Santa Monica, California
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: James T. Butts, Jr., Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Recommendation to Authorize Donation of Used Handheld Radios to Santa
Monica High School.
Introduction
This report recommends the City Council authorize the City Manager to donate fifteen
used Police Department handheld radios to Santa Monica High School.
Background
The City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District have
worked in a close partnership for a number of years to the advantage of the entire
community. Currently, the Police Department Youth Services Division is looking at ways
to better assist administration at Santa Monica High School to maintain the high level of
safety on campus that the School District, Police Department and community have come to
expect.
Discussion
Santa Monica High School has ten radios for 250 staff members. More radios are needed
for adequate supervision of 3,100 students on a campus that consists of thirteen buildings
on thirty-two acres in a high traffic area. The 2000/2001 projected student population is
1
3,100, with a staff of 250. Radio equipment no longer needed or used by the Police
Department will provide the school staff with an additional resource to maintain more
effective communications in handling emergency situations.
Budget/Financial Impact
This recommendation will result in minimal financial impact since the resale value of the
radios to be donated is nominal. At $25 each, the total value of the fifteen radios
recommended for donation is estimated to be $375.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the City Manager to donate used Police
Department handheld radios to Santa Monica High School.
