City Council Meeting: April 12, 2005 Santa Monica, California
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: City Staff
SUBJECT: Donation of One Used Vehicle to the Santa Monica High School
Automotive Department
Introduction
This report recommends that the City Council authorize the City Manager to donate one
used 1994 Ford, Crown Victoria, CNG sedan to the Santa Monica High School
Automotive Department. The CNG sedan will be used to educate Santa Monica High
School students on alternatively fueled vehicle technology. Council approval is required
for the donation of City property, which is disposed of at auction.
Discussion
The City of Santa Monica regularly rotates the oldest, high mileage vehicles out of the
fleet when they are no longer economical to maintain due to the cost and frequency of
repairs. A replacement vehicle has already been purchased and this used vehicle is
waiting for final disposition (auction). All City logos and identifying markings will be
removed from the vehicle prior to delivery to Santa Monica High School. Contributing
toward the education of SAMOHI students on the repair and maintenance of
alternatively fueled vehicles is consistent with the City’s vision and practice of
environmental, economic and social sustainability.
1
The City Council has previously approved donations of used City vehicles to other
entities, including the State of Sinaloa, Mexico, and the City of Mazatlan, Mexico.
Budget/Financial Impact
Fleet Maintenance estimates the auction value of the 1994 sedan to be approximately
$800. This revenue will not be received if Council approves the staff recommendation.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the donation of one used vehicle to
the Santa Monica High School Automotive Department.
