Council Meeting: January 28, 2003 Santa Monica, California
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: James T. Butts, Jr., Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Recommendation to Authorize Donation of Used Police Bicycles to Santa
Monica High School.
Introduction
This report recommends the City Council authorize the City Manager to donate three used
Police Department Bicycles to Santa Monica High School.
Background
The City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District have
worked in a close partnership for a number of years to the advantage of the community.
The Police Department Youth Services Division seeks ways to better assist administration
at Santa Monica High School to maintain the high level of safety on campus that the
District, Police Department and community have come to expect.
Discussion
Santa Monica High School security staff currently uses two bicycles. More bicycles are
needed for adequate supervision of 3,400 students on a campus that consists of thirteen
buildings on thirty-two acres in a high traffic area. Three bicycles, which are four years old
1
and no longer needed or used by the Police Department, will provide the school staff with
an additional resource for that purpose.
Budget/Financial Impact
This recommendation will result in minimal financial impact since the approximate resale
value of the bicycles to be donated is nominal. At $150 each, the total value of the three
bicycles recommended for donation is estimated to be $450.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the City Manager to donate three used
Police Department bicycles to Santa Monica High School.
