FE8 2 5 _ RP:DTA:VR Council Meeting: February 25, 1986 Santa Monica, California TO: Mayor and city Council FROM: Recreation and Parks commission SUBJECT: Recommendation of Recreation and Parks Commission for Santa Monica Girls' Club to use Lincoln Park tennis courts for the First Annual Celebrity Tennis Tournament on July 12, 1986 INTRODUCTION This report transmits a request from the Santa Monica Girls' Club to hold a celebrity fundraising tennis tournament on Saturday July 12, 1986, 7:00 am-7:00 pm, in Lincoln Park. BACKGROUND The Girls' Club would like to hold a celebrity tennis tournament in which 24 patrons would pay $200 each to play in a doubles tennis match or matches with one of 24 celebrity participants. The event would utilize the six tennis courts at Lincoln Park. There would be a $3.00 general admission fee for access to the stadium seats and standing room around the various tennis courts for spectators. A $25 VIP luncheon ticket would also be available to partici- pants. Food, including hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream, soda pop, would also be sold during the tennis matches and a celebrity photo booth would be available for those interested in purchasing a $2-3 photo taken with a celebrity. Lastly, a fashion show and auction would be presented in the center court. The Girls' Club would provide their own security and Clean-up crews and have a /o-~ - 1 - FEE 2 5 i986 nurse on the premises during the event. No alcoholic beverages would be sold or allowed on the premises in conjunction with this event. Planners propose to enclose the area between Miles Playhouse and the tennis courts with a tent to control ingress and egress to the event. At its February 20th meeting Recreation and Parks commission unanimously approved this request and recommends the city council appove it for the Girls' Club. BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT The only known cost to the City for this event would be the $240 in reservation fees lost due to inability to utilize the 6 tennis courts. The Girls' Club anticipates netting $20,000 from this fundraising effort. $5,000 would be paid to the producer, David Mirisch Enterprises (see attached materials). Income would be produced through advertising sold for the program, the auction, the $200 patron fee, the food sold at the event I and admission fees. RECmfMENDATIONS The Staff recommends that: 1. The City Council approve use of Lincoln Park tennis courts for the First Annual Girls' Club Celebrity Tennis Tournament. 2. The Staff also recommends that council waive the $240 fee for reservation of the tennis courts. - 2 -
