Jacaranda Acutifolia and (34) Cassia Leptophylla Trees
for Third street Mall Improvement, Bid Number 2168
INTRODUCTION
This report concerns award of bid to furnish and deliver (96)
Jacaranda Acutifolia and (34) Cassia Leptophylla trees for the
Santa Monica Mall located on Third Street between wilshire
Boulevard and Colorado Avenue in the total amount of $133,794.00,
including applicable sales tax.
BACKGROUND
In response to published Notices Inviting Bids (published
February 13 and 14, 1988) to furnish and deliver (96) Jacaranda
Acutifolia and (34) Cassia Leptophylla trees for the Third street
Mall area in accordance with City specifications, bids were
received and publicly opened and read on February 25, 1988.
Proposal forms were mailed to seven vendors and notices were
advertised in accordance with City Charter and Municipal Code
provisions. Two proposals were received. Valley Crest Tree Co.
bid only the 96 Jacaranda Acutifolia trees and vista Hill Nursery
bid only the 34 Cassia Leptophylla trees as follows:

The bid specifications are for the contract growing of Jacaranda
Acutifolia (Jacaranda Mimosaefolia) and Cassia Leptophylla trees
for Third street Mall improvements. The trees shall be prepared
for delivery and installation between October 1, 1988, and
March 1, 1989. Delivery of the trees will be to the Santa Monica
Mall located on Third street between Wilshire Boulevard and
Colorado Avenue.
The City and the general contractor will
inspect before and after delivery for conformity to the specifi-
cations.
staff has examined the bids and finds that the prices are
competitive and the quality of trees grown will meet or exceed
the specifications.
Staff recommends that the bid be split
awarding the 96 Jacaranda Acutifolia trees to Valley Crest Tree
Co. and the 34 Cassia Leptophylla trees to vista Hill Nursery.
BUDGETARY/FINANCIAL IMPACT
Fiscal Year 1987/88 appropriation authority for this purchase is
in the Mall Improvement Project, account number 01-720-263-
000-921.

RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the award of Bid #2168 be made to Valley
Crest Tree Co. for 96 Jacaranda Acutifolia trees in the total
amount of $117,576.00, including tax, and to Vista Hill Nursery
for 34 Cassia Leptophylla trees in the total amount of
$16,218.00, including tax, as the lowest and best bidders.
