SE? 2 5 1984 ., . . pr .EASE OPPOSE OIL DRILLIN.; OFFSHORE OF LAGUNA BEACH The Federal Department of Interior through Lease Sale 80 plans to open areas off shore of South Orange County for oil drilling. Because of public opposition, the Department of InterIor has temporarily withdrawn areas within about 13 miles of the Laguna Beach coastline. H~~ever, there will stIll be tracts between Laguna Beach and Catalina Island that will be offered in October for oil exploration. Please help us oppose oil drIlling bet\~en Laguna Beach and Catalina Island by: FIRST PRIORITY - Supporting an amendment to the 1985 Interior Department approprIations bill to place a temporary moratorium on any oil explo- ration withIn approxllrBtely 13 to 20 miles of the Orange County and San DIego coastline. Letters or telegrams are needed this week particularly to U.S. Senator Pete Wilson, U.S. Senator James McClure (Chair.rdn of the Subcommittee on InterIor ApproprIations), and Congressman Robert B adh am. SECO~TI PRIORITY - Supporting federal legIslation (Sa 2324-Cranston and HR 4589) \'Jhich would amend the Coastal Zone t-lanagE'!!lEmt Act to increase state control over federal all leaSIng. ThIS legislatlon would reverse a SupreIT~ Court deCIsion which removed a coastal state's ablllty to require that federal oil leaslDg be consistent with state coastal plans. THIRD PRIORITY - Advising key legislators of your opposltion to oil drilling bet~een the South Orange County coastllne and catalIna Island.
