Dear Resident:
The Santa Monica City Council, at its meeting of February 13, 1979, considered
a staff recommendation to wlden Ocean Park Blvd. from lincoln Blvd. to 10th
Court. This recommendatlon was made to improve traffic safety and reduce con-
gestion and confusion for westbound motorists on Ocean Park Blvd.
The absence of a protected left turn storage lane has created confusion and
congestion for westbound motorists over the past ten years Slnce Ocean Park
Blvd. was wldened from lincoln Blvd. west. Presently Ocean Park Blvd. east
of llncoln Blvd. is only 45 feet wide and is strlped to facilitate two travel
lanes in each direct1on. There is not suff1cient width to provide for a pro-
tected left turn storage lane. The staff proposes to widen Ocean Park Blvd.
10 feet on the north side and 3 feet on the south side to prov1de for this
protected left turn storage lane. In order to meet today's safety standards,
it is necessary to have 58 feet in width to accommodate two lanes in each
d1rect1on plus a left turn storage lane.
Present City right-of-way on Ocean Park Blvd. is 70 feet. If the proposed
widening is implemented, no additional right-of-way will be necessary. Side-
walks will exist on both sides of Ocean Park Blvd.; 7 feet wide on the south
side, 5 feet w1de on the north slde. Based upon observations by staff, these
sidewalk w1dths, while minimal, should be adequate for the amount of pedestrian
act1vity 1n this area.
After del1beration by City Council at its February 13th meet1ng, staff was
instructed to not1fy res1dents of the proposed street lmprovement. Th1S is
being done 1n order to permit residents to voice the1r oplnions, whether pro
or con, on this proposed street improvement. The matter wlll be brought
before the Council aga1n at its meet1ng of April 10, 1979. Should you wish
to express a written opinion, please do so by March 26, 1979. Verbal opin10ns,
of course, may be made at the Council meeting 1tself on the night of April 10.
Should you have any questions concern1ng this matter, please contact the
Parking and Traffic Engineer, Room 115, City Hall, 1685 Main Street. Santa
Mon1ca, California 90401, or phone 393-9975, extension 293.
Yours truly,
