Dero: Mayor Genser and the City Council,
As of its November 10, 1999 meeting, the Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) voted, as
the Commission on Older Americans did in 1994, to establish a Commissioner Emeritus position in
an effort to officially utilize the talents of Commissioners who have served their allowable terms with
the COSW. The establishment of this position would enable the COSW to further its goals and
continue to work toward eliminating inequality between the sexes in all areas of life. The position
would require appointment by the City Council.
We recommend that the following criteria be established for the position of Commissioner Emeritus:
1) A nominee must have served one full-term with the COSW, one full-term as defined by the City
as serving three-fourths or more of a term.
2) A nominee must continue to be active with the Santa Monica community.
3) There would be no limit on the number of Commissioners Emeritus positions.
4) Appointment to this position would be made by City Council based on recommendations ofthe
COSW
5) Appointments would be for a two-year term. Unlimited term renewals could be made by the City
Council with the recommendation of the COSW.
6) The position of Commissioner Emeritus would be a non-voting position.
7) The position of Commissioner Emeritus would be allowed to represent the COSW at community
functions and serve on commission committees, at the will and discretion of voting
Commissioners.
8) The nominee must abide by the bylaws ofthe COSW.
We hope this new category of commissioner meets with your approval and are looking forward to
hearing from you.
Sincerely,
il')~ Lip~
