SR-106-015-01 City Council Meeting: August 14, 2001 Santa Monica, California TO: Mayor and Councilmembers FROM: City Staff SUBJECT: Recommendation to Appoint A New Member of the City’s Task Force on the Environment INTRODUCTION This report recommends that City Council appoint Robert Rees as a new member to fill a vacancy on the Task Force on the Environment. BACKGROUND The Task Force on the Environment was established by City Council in July 1991 with the appointment of seven members by the City Manager. Each of the seven members either resides or is employed within the City of Santa Monica. Members possess expertise in various environmental areas ranging from stormwater pollution control to energy efficiency. Since its inception, the Task Force has provided input and leadership on numerous environmental issues impacting the City and was the principal sponsor of the Santa Monica Sustainable City Program. The Task Force plays a critical role in the review and goal setting process with respect to the City’s broad environmental agenda and has provided ongoing advice and expertise as specific program proposals have been formulated. DISCUSSION Tom Nelson, a Task Force member and architect who provided the Task Force with expertise in sustainable design and construction, recently resigned from the Task Force 1 because his firm relocated outside of Santa Monica. To assist in filling the vacancy, City staff posted a newspaper advertisement inviting applications from persons living or working in Santa Monica. Three applications were received and reviewed by the Task Force at their June 18, 2001 meeting. The Task Force recommended that each of the candidates be interviewed prior to making a final recommendation. The applicants were interviewed on June 25, 2001 by three members of the Task Force and a City staff member. Based on the results of the interview, applicant Robert Rees was recommended by the Task Force to fill the vacancy. Mr. Rees is an architect in the Santa Monica office of Marmol Radziner and Associates and has significant expertise in the area of sustainable design and construction. BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT There are no fiscal impacts associated with the recommendation of this staff report.
