Council Meeting: March 27, 2001 Santa Monica, California
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: City Staff
SUBJECT: Recommendation to Authorize the City Manager to Negotiate and Execute
an Agreement with the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Winter
Olympic Games of 2002 for the Use of Up to Twenty (20) Transit Vehicles.
INTRODUCTION
This report recommends that the City Council authorize the City Manager to negotiate
and execute an agreement with the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the use of up to
twenty (20) forty-foot transit vehicles during the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games
and the Salt Lake 2002 Paralympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
BACKGROUND
In preparation for the Winter Olympic Games of 2002, the Salt Lake Olympic Committee
(SLOC) identified a need for an estimated 1,000 transit buses for spectator
transportation and contacted Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus.
DISCUSSION
Staff has determined that up to 20 buses could be provided from the Big Blue Bus fleet
to support the Olympic effort. These buses will be available because the Big Blue Bus
is scheduled to receive thirty-seven (37) liquefied natural gas (LNG) buses in Fall 2001.
Should unforeseen circumstance delay the delivery of the LNG buses beyond January
2002, no buses will be provided. The Big Blue Bus will ensure that the buses are in
good operating condition prior to sending them to Salt Lake City.

BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
This agreement will have no significant impact on Big Blue Bus operations. Under the
terms of the proposed agreement, all expenses for transporting the vehicles to and from
Salt Lake City will be borne by the SLOC. No rental fee will be charged for the use of
the buses, but the SLOC agrees to purchase an inventory of spare parts and return the
buses in the same condition in which they were received.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council authorize the City Manager to negotiate and
execute an agreement with the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympic
Games of 2002 for the use of twenty (20) transit vehicles.
