City Council Meeting: March 14, 2006 Santa Monica, CA
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: City Staff
SUBJECT: Recommendation to Consider Redesign of Police Patrol Vehicles
Introduction
This report recommends that the City Council approve a new design for police patrol
vehicles, incorporating the City logo.
Discussion
In the 1990s, Sussman/Prejza and Company designed the City?s new graphic identity
and associated color and graphics for City vehicles, incorporating the City logo. Council
has asked that the logo be incorporated on police patrol vehicles and Sussman/Prejza
has developed several designs for that purpose. Designs featuring the current patrol
vehicle color scheme are attached, as well as a design that incorporates the more
widely used ?black and white? combination. The black and white design, which may
provide more ready identification as a police vehicle and greater visibility on the street,
is preferred by the department and is used widely throughout California.
Budget/Financial Impact
There are no increased costs associated with the redesign of patrol vehicles. The new
design will be implemented as patrol vehicles are replaced beginning with no more than
40 vehicles in Fiscal Year 05/06, with completion by June 30, 2009.
