SR-700-007 (2) City Council Meeting: January 25, 2005 Santa Monica, California TO: Mayor and Councilmembers FROM: City Staff SUBJECT: Resolution Authorizing Donation of a Used and Obsolete Turnout Suit to Local 1109 IAFF Introduction The attached resolution authorizes the donation of an obsolete turnout suit, which cannot be used for its intended purpose to Local 1109 IAFF. The resolution is presented to the City Council for adoption. Discussion The Santa Monica Fire Department currently has used turnout suits (protective clothing), which can no longer be worn by personnel responding to an emergency incident due to their deteriorated condition caused by normal wear. They are obsolete and they do not meet current Cal-OSHA requirements. These suits constitute surplus property that cannot be sold or given to anyone who might use them for their intended purpose. Because the turnout suits have no firefighting value, the Fire Department wishes to donate one of them to Local 1109 IAFF. The remaining obsolete turnout suits will be destroyed or donated to a regional fire academy for use in non-hazardous environments. A condition of this donation would be that all City identification be removed from the suit and that the suit be used only for union safety campaigns and publicity purposes. Budget/Financial Impact The recommendation presented in this report does not have any budget or financial impact. Recommendation It is respectfully recommended that the City Council adopt the accompanying resolution.
