City Council Meeting: March 9, 2004 Santa Monica, California
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: City Staff
SUBJECT: Naming of Former Route 187
Introduction
This report recommends that the City Council name the connector road between
Palisades Beach Road (Pacific Coast Highway) and Ocean Avenue.
Discussion
Former State Route 187 is currently an unnamed connector road between Palisades
Beach Road and Ocean Ave. There are no addresses on this one block road and there
is no significant vehicular access from side streets, alleys, or driveways.
At its September 9, 2003 meeting, Council authorized staff to begin a process to solicit
possible street names from the community. Staff conducted an online poll in December
and January which was promoted via the City's Internet home page, the Engineering
and Architecture Division home page and a story on City TV's "Santa Monica Update"
show. This process resulted in 97 different street name suggestions which appear in
Attachment 2. Staff recommends that Council select a name, either from those
submitted or select a different name, and direct staff to proceed with naming the
connector road.

Budqet/Financial Impact
There are no budget or financial impacts as a result of this recommendation. Should the
street be named, there would be minimal budget/financial impacts related to installation
of new street signs.
