City Council Meeting: November 11, 2003 Santa Monica~ California
TO:
Mayor and City Council
FROM:
City Staff
SUBJECT: Naming of Former Route 187
Introduction
This report recommends that the City Council authorize staff to initiate a process to
name the connector road between Palisades Beach Road (Pacific Coast Highway) and
Ocean Avenue.
Backqround
In March 2002, staff researched the history of the naming of Barnard Way, Ocean
Avenue, and State Route 187. At that time, Council authorized staff to initiate a public
process to rename a portion of Ocean Avenue to Barnard Way to create continuity in the
street name. In order to keep the street name proposals distinct, staff did not address
naming the connector road at that time.
Discussion
Former State Route 187 is currently an unnamed connector road between Palisades
Beach Road and Ocean Ave. There are no addresses on this one block road and there
is no significant vehicular access from side streets, alleys, or driveways. The naming of
the road can be used as a symbolic measure to honor someone in the community or a

shared community value. Staff proposes a community process be used to name the
connector road
· The community will be asked to submit names for the street via an online form
and Seascape.
· Staff will present to Council a list of all names submitted. Council could then:
o Direct staff to proceed with naming the street one of the submitted names
or another name selected by Council.
o Narrow the list and conduct an online poll to further inform Council's
selection of a name,
Budqet/Financiallmpact
There are no budget or financial impacts as a result of this recommendation. Should the
street be named, there would be minimal budget/financial impacts related to installation
of new street signs.
Recommendations
Staff recommends that Council direct staff to initiate one of the above processes to
name former State Route 187.
