SR-850-005-01 (22) EPWM:CC:AA:LF;F:\DATA\SPFILES\sp1771 - Main Library Expansion\cc1771T1(DP).DOC City Council Meeting: March 11, 2003 Santa Monica, California TO: Mayor and City Council Chairperson FROM: City Staff SUBJECT: Modification to Contract 8160 (CCS) with ETZ Construction for a New Contract Amount of $600,276 Introduction This report recommends that the City Council authorize the City Manager to negotiate and execute a modification to contract 8160 (CCS) with ETZ Construction in the amount of $95,700 for a new contract amount of $600,276, for seismic retrofit of the temporary Deleted: work required by the City of Santa Monica Building and Safety Main Library. Background At its meeting on November 12, 2002, Council authorized the City Manager to negotiate and execute a contract with ETZ Construction in the amount of $504,576 and a $75,500 contingency for tenant improvements at 1324 Fifth Street, which is to be used as the temporary Main Library while the new Main Library is constructed. Plans for The Temporary Library Tenant Improvement Project were drafted and submitted to the Building and Safety Division (B&S) for plan check. In the process of this plan check, B&S found that the building required seismic retrofitting to be in Deleted: and City Ordinance. compliance with current codes. 1 The seismic retrofit of the temporary Main Library includes: ? Adding a large steel beam from wall to wall and attaching existing ?Continuity Ties? to the new beam. ? Welding plates to existing metal trusses and bolting them to the concrete walls Completion of the seismic retrofit project requires the demolition and subsequent Formatted: Bullets and Numbering replacement of dropped ceilings, HVAC ducts, wall insulation, and some walls. This work was recently approved by B&S, priced for construction by ETZ Construction, and is the basis of this modification. Discussion Completion of the improvements for the temporary Main Library by ETZ Construction is required to keep the Main Library project on schedule. The temporary library must be completed and occupied before any work on the new Main Library can begin. Recommendations 2 Staff recommends that the City Council: 1) Authorize the City Manager to negotiate and execute a modification to contract 8160 (CCS) with ETZ Construction in the amount of $95,700, for a new contract total of $600,276; and 2) Authorize the City Engineer to issue any necessary change orders to complete additional work within budget authority.
