SUBJECT Recommendation to Appoint New Members to the City's Task Force on
the Environment
INTRODUCTION
This report recommends that City Council appomt Mathew Petersen and Thomas Nelson
as new members to fill two vacant positions on the Task Force on the Environment
BACKGROUND
The Task Force on the Environment was established by City Council In July 1991 with the
appoIntment of seven members recommended by the City Manager Each of the seven
members either reSides or IS employed within the City of Santa MOnica The members
possess expertise In vanous envIronmental areas ranging from stormwater pollutlon
control to energy effiCiency
Since ItS Inception, the Task Force has provided Input and leadership on numerous
environmental Issues Impacting the CIty and was the principal sponsor of the Santa

Monica Sustainable City Program The Task Force plays a cntlcal role In the review and
goal setting process for the City's broad environmental agenda and has proVided ongOing
adVice and expertise as specific program proposals have been formulated
DISCUSSION
MIriam Koral and Steve DaVIS have recently resigned from the Task Force due to
professional obligations To fill the two vacancIes. City staff posted advertisements In local
newspapers Inviting applications from persons liVing or working In Santa Monica SIX
applications were received and reviewed by the Task Force at their July 6, 1998 meetrng
Applicants Mathew Petersen and Thomas Nelson were recommended by the Task Force
to fill the two vacancies based on that review Mathew Petersen IS a Santa Monica
reSident and IS the Executive Director of Global Green USA, a non-profit organIzatIon that
addresses renewable energy and sustainable development Issues Thomas Nelson IS an
architect In the Santa MonIca office of Helmuth, Obata and Kassabaum (HOK) He has
Significant expertise In the area of sustainable deSign and construction and IS the Santa
Monica representative on HOK's sustainable deSIgn group The five current members of
the Task Force, City staff and the City Manager recommend that Mathew Petersen and
Thomas Nelson be appointed to fill the two vacant pOSItions
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT
There are no fiscal Impacts associated With the recommendatIon of thiS staff report

It IS recommended that City Council authorize the City Manager to appoint Mathew
Petersen and Thomas Nelson as new members to fill the vacant positIons on the Santa
MOnica Task Force on the Environment
