SUBJECT RecommendatIon to authorize the CIty Manager to exerCIse the optIon to
renew the contract between the CIty of Santa MOnica and
MedTrans/Goodhew for emergency ambulance service for a term of two (2)
years
INTRODUCTION
This report requests that the City Council authonze the City Manager to renew the
agreement between the City of Santa MOnica and MedTrans/Goodhew for emergency
ambulance service for a term of two (2) years as authorized In SectIon one of the current
agreement executed on June 1, 1993
BACKGROUND
On June 1, 1993, the City of Santa Monica entered Into an agreement with Goodhew
Ambulance Service to provide emergency medical service for a term of four (4) years This
agreement also prOVided the City an option to renew the agreement In Increments of two
(2) years after the InitIal four (4) year term Goodhew Ambulance ServIce has sInce been
purchased by MedTrans/Goodhew and has operated under the current agreement since
March of 1995 MedTrans/Goodhew IS a wholly owned Subsidiary of Laidlaw Medical
Transportation, Inc LaIdlaw Medical Transportation, Inc IS a wholly owned subsidiary of
Laidlaw Inc
DISCUSSION
A review committee was formed In January 1997 to review and analyze the past
performance of MedTrans/Goodhew and to diSCUSS any administrative Issues affecting the
current agreement This committee was composed of the Fire Chief, Richard Bndges,
Deputy Fire Chief, Ettore A Berardinelli, Paramedic Coordinator, Captain Mike McKean,
FirefIghter/Paramedic, Lee McNett 6G

As part of the renewal evaluation process, Fire Department staff reviewed essential
requirements and procedures of MedTrans/Goodhew and concluded that they continue to
meet all CIty requirements as described In the anginal agreement and staff report dated
January 19, 1993
In addition to the above reView, the committee Identified additional operational and
administrative requirements, which were agreed to by representatives of
MedTrans/Goodhew These operational components will be Incorporated Into the
agreement upon renewal
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
There will be no budget or financial Impact to the City
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Manager be authorized to renew the contracUagreement
with MedTrans/Goodhew Ambulance ServIce for emergency ambulance service for a term
of two (2) years as authorized In Section 1 of the current agreement
