SUBJECT Recommendation to approve request from Santa MOnica College to Include
fIreworks In their 15th annual "Celebrate America" concert program and to
allocate $10,000 for the fIreworks dIsplay at the College.
INTRODUCTION
This report recommends that City Council approve a fireworks display at Santa MOnica
College (SMC) dUring theIr "Celebrate America" concert program on Saturday, June 28,
1997.
DISCUSSION
City Council approval IS required for non-City sponsored fireworks events. SMC proposes
to hold the "Celebrate America" concert program on Saturday, June 28, 1997, In the
college stadium from 5'00 p m. to 9'30 p.m The celebration Will end With a fifteen (15)
minute fIreworks dIsplay beginnIng at 9 00 p.m. ThIS WIll be the 15th year that the event
has been held at SMC The City has approved the display and proVided financial support
for the celebration for the past five years.
The City's Event Management Team has reviewed the details of the event and has given
SMC conceptual approval to conduct the event contingent upon City CounCil's approval
of the fireworks Campus Pollee will handle parking and traffiC control and Will direct
traffiC to eXit on PICO Boulevard rather than on reSidential streets Campus Police Will also
momtor the gates to ensure that no alcohol or flr"works are brought Into the st6F

The City has also budgeted funding to produce the third annual Fourth of July Stroll In the
Park In Palisades Park on Friday, July 4 from 1'00 p m to 4'00 pm. In past years, thiS
event Included small musical groups, giant puppets, and assorted performers throughout
the Park from the Pier to Arizona Avenue. The stroll has afforded reSidents an
opportunity to participate In fa m Ily-o rlented outdoor activitIes In celebration of
Independence Day The event will culminate with a processional through the park with
participation by community members and artists
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
Santa MOnica College has requested City funds In the amount of $10,000 to support the
fireworks on Saturday, June 28, 1997 Funds are available In nondepartmental account
01-700-274-00000-5506-00000 There IS no additional budget/financial Impact with
thiS request. Santa MOnica College WIll bear all other event costs and Campus Polrce Will
provide all security and traffiC control.
RECOMMENDA TIONS
Staff recommends that City Council approve Santa MOnica College request to Include
fireworks In their 15th annual "Celebrate America" concert program and allocation of
$10,000 for the fireworks display at the College.
