As you probably know. the Santa Monica.MaHou Unified SchOOl District bas been dependent
on the local citizenry to maintain the high quality education our children need. Once again, it
is time to put the parcel taJt before the voler~.
We are asking for another six years and need your support. We are increasing the amount we
are a.~ng per parcel by ten dollars ($lO'()O) to sixty-eight dollars ($68'()()). This time we are
also including an annual adjustment using the Consllmer Price Index. Had we adjusted
annually for inflation from our very first year of the parcel tax (1984)t we would have been
receiving. eighty-four doJJars ($R4.00) per parccl now,
Taxes requiring a two-thirds vote are [)Hcn difficult to pass. We have been successful in the
past for several reasons:
· the School Dislricl continues \.I) do a good .lob of educating students in spite of the
Jack of support from the State;
· we have never had organized opposition;
· \he parcel tax has been an opportuni.ty fot. very divergent interests to come
together; and.
· we have never been overly ambitious in what we are asking.
As we near the November election, we would greatly appreciate having each member of the
San\a Monica City Council sign on as an active partner in our endeavor, Right now all we
request is: (1) that you agendizc a statement of end()r~cment for an extension of the parcel
tax with a slight incre.ftsc and a Cl>l a~1jt1slO1ent.
Your endorsement is critical to the passage of our parcel Lax. The high qualily of our schools
is one of the many imporla.I1t assets of our community. Please help us protect and improve
on that which we have built together.
Thank you f()r your help.
