SUBJECT RECOMMENDATION TO APPROVE PACIFIC PARK GRAND OPENING
FIREWORKS CELEBRATION
INTRODUCTION
The follOWing report recommends approval of a fIreworks display In conjunction with
the PaCific Park grand opening on Fnday, June 28, 1996
BACKGROUND
On March 26, 1996, the City's Event Management Team reviewed a request to stage
a fireworks display on a barge In the Santa MOnica Bay In conjunction With the grand
opemng of PaCific Park
DISCUSSION
PaCifiC Park staff, With the support of the Pier Restoration Corporation Board,
proposes a fireworks display on Friday evening, June 28, 1996, as part of theIr grand
opening celebration The celebration IS scheduled from Fnday through SundaYr June
28-30r and the fireworks display Will occur on Fnday at 8'45 p.m The fireworks
display IS accompanied by taped musIc and will last 8-10 mmutes It IS free and Will
be VISible along the coastline PubliCity about the fireworks display Will be limited to
an announcement over the loudspeaker ten minutes pnor to the show and an ad m the
local Outlook
Event organizers antiCipate 2,500 people In attendance

The fireworks company, Pyro Spectaculars, has conducted annual fireworks drsplays
for the Crty of Redondo Beach and Santa MOnica College. Fireworks wrll be launched
from a barge loaded rn the City of Long Beach and will amve via tug boat which will
be statIoned alongside the barge at all times In case the barge needs to be
repositioned Because the frreworks are being discharged from a barge In the Bay, the
State Fire Marshall has JUriSdiction Consequently, the Santa MOnica Fire Department
will not requrre any personnel at thiS event The State Fire Marshall wrlllnspect the
barge rn Long Beach and WIll require that two boats accompany the barge. The
fireworks wrll be drscharged upwards and wrll not rnterfere with flrght paths
The Pollee Department will deploy one Community Service OffIcer to staff the Police
Substation, four officers on horses, and four offIcers on foot Total estimated police
costs are $3,437, whIch will be borne by Pacrflc Park.
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
Event organizers will assume and pay all event costs, Including the cost for pollee
serVices, estimated at $3,437
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that Council approve a drsplay of frreworks In conjunction with the
Pacific Park grand opening fIreworks celebration on June 28, 1996.
