LANOMARK DESIGNATION FINDINGS
The structure exemplrfEes, symbof~zes, or man~fes#s elements af the cultural,
social, and arch~tectural history flf the City in that its design, which features
arnamental shir~gle sidr~rg, frst and second story porches, sweepmg roofs,
shallow eaves, and tnpartite fer~estration. reflects the elements of the Amer~can
Shingle style, and remams one of the rare examples of such faund in the C~ty
The American shrngle style was ar~ arch~tectural tradit~on that origmated ~n
seaside communities in the r~ortheastern United States This domestic
archrtectural style mrgrated to the west coast durmg the early 20th Cent~ary when
the 1127 6th house was constructed as a representat~ve example af the idEOm,
this structu~e is ar~ important contn~utor to tt~e archrtect~ra! t~istory of the C~ty and
its resort cottage buEldEng her~tage
2 The structure has aesthet~c or a~t~stic interest or value m that this ~ndigenous
American architectural style incorporated domestic features common to #he
Queen Ar~ne and Coionfal Rev~~a! styes, specficaiiy, the struct~re's ornamental
siding, porches on #~oth f rst and second stories, sweeping roofs, shaliow eaves,
and tripart~te fenestration This orr~amentation, such as the vanety of s~ingle
patterns, ir~ciuding fishscale, wave diamond and cross-hatch patterns, was an
orig~naf artis#ic creation ~f the builder Facade textures such as this reflect the
use af new technology in decarating a~d woodworkmg that hacf become a~aElable
to carpenter-builders in th~ last decades of the 19th Century
3 It is an established and famdiar visual fea#ure of a neEghborhood in that the
structure ~s t~e only buildmg on the block and ~mmediate ~icmity which represents
the vernacular shingle design pop~lar durE~g the early 20th century whe~ this
str~cture was bu~lt This unique styie makes the st~ucture easEly id~ntifiai~Ee and
d~stinguishable from the surroundmg infill buildEngs m the neighborhood
~
4 Due to earthquake damage occurr~ng as a result of the 1994 Narthridge
earthquake, the building cannot be repa~red wi#ho~t removal of the s~gnificant
burldtng e~em~nts, mast notably the decoratrve shmgle srd~ng Therefore,
demolition of the structure is granted without the issuance a~ a certifieate of
apprapr~ateness'~ursuant to the City's Landmark Ordir~ance Specific damage
mcludes a cracked unrein~o~ced masonry chimney at the first and second flaors,
ex#ensi~e damage to first flaor ptaster wall finishes at #he ~oiler fl~e. which ~s
vulr~erab~e and sub~ect to colfapsing, openmg in }oints m wood sid~ng, extensi~e
mortar loss at foundations, shifting and s~ttling af the flaor, cracks m t~e wall
fmrsh at the daor frame; roof damage. and damaged st~ear walis
