A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF
APRIL 14 THROUGH APRIL 21, 1996 AS THE DAYS
OF REMEMBRANCE OF THE VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST
WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic
persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and
its collaborators from 1933 to 1945; and
WHEREAS, Jews were the primary victims of the Holocaust, six
million were murdered, and other groups were also targeted for
destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic or national reasons
including Gypsies, the handicapped, Poles, homosexuals, Jehovah's
witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war and political dissidents; and
WHEREAS, 1996 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the
International Military Tribunal's trial at Nuremberg of twenty-two
maj or Nazi leaders, and the continuation of subsequent military
tribunals, at Nuremberg as well as in other Allied-occupied sectors
of Germany, to try additional Nazi criminals; and
WHEREAS, the charter for the Nuremberg Trials established, for
the first time in international law, that crimes against humanity
as well as crimes against peace and war crimes were punishable,
thus making the individuals who were responsible for promulgating
government policies that resulted in aggressive war and genocide

accountable for their actions; and
WHEREAS, Americans recognize that in addition to the need for
international law to provide judicial accountability for crimes
against humanity, each citizen is responsible for eternal vigilance
against all tyranny and for speaking out against such tyranny; and
WHEREAS, Tuesday, April 16, 1996 has been designated, pursuant
to an Act of Congress, as a Day of Remembrance of the Victims of
the Holocaust, known internationally as Yom Hashoah,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City Council hereby designates the week of
sunday, April 14, through Sunday, April 21, 1996, as Days of
Remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust in memory o'f those
victims. The city Council also declares that it, being comprised
of citizens of the city of Santa Monica, will collectively and
individually strive to overcome bigotry, hatred and indifference
through learning, tolerance and remembrance.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this Resolution, and thenceforth the same shall be in full force
and effect.
