SUBJEeT: Award of Contract to Refurbish the Santa Monica eity
Jail
Introduction
This report recommends that the city Council award a contract for
the refurbishment of the Santa Monica city Jail to DTEC
Construction Inc., the lowest responsible bidder, in the amount
of $43,900.00.
Background
During the 1990-199l budget process, the City Council approved
funding to refurbish the Santa Monica City Jail.
The existing
Jailer's Office is undersized with minimal cabinet space and
inadequate work space. The project plans and specifications,
prepared by eity Staff, include the remodel and replacement of
the flooring, ceiling, cabinets, \vork area and counters. The
project also includes the lnstallation of safety wire mesh in the
detox jail cell and plexiglass partitions at the admittance
counter.
A Notice Inviting Bids was published on May 11 and 13, 1991 in
the Evening Outlook, and four construction journals, and was sent
to eight WMBE associatlons. Plans and specifications were issued
to seven contractors.
Bids were received and read publicly on
June 17, 1991, by the Deputy city Clerk.

with 3 references. All references reported that the contractor's

Recommendation
It is recommended that the city Council:
1. Award a contract to Refurbish the Santa Monica City Jail to
DTEC Construction, Inc. the lowest responsible bidder, in
the amount of $ 43,900.00 and
2. Authorize the City Engineer to issue any necessary change
orders to complete additional work in conformance with the
Administrative Instruction on change orders.
