SUBJECT: RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE BROWN PELICAN AS THE
OFFICIAL BIRD OF SANTA MONICA
INTRODUCTION
This report responds to the city council request to draft a
resolution designating the Brown Pelican as the official bird of
Santa Monica.
BACKGROUND
Since its founding as a City in 1875, and subsequent chartering
as a municipal corporation in 1946, the city of Santa Monica has,
aside from the City seal, designated only one other symbol as
being representative of the City. In 1935, following adoption of
a resolution by the Chamber of Commerce, the bougainvillea became
the official flower of the City.
Throughout its history local landmarks such as the Municipal
Pier, the beach, Palisades Park, Douglas Aircraft, etc. have been
identified with the city. Except for the bougainvillea, however,
nothing else has been designated as an official City symbol. On
November l4, 1989, Mallory Pearce addressed the city Council
requesting that the Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidental is) be
designated the official bird of the city of Santa Monica.

Of the eight species of pelicans found worldwide, the Brown
Pelican is found only in the Americas, and is the only subspecies
found in this region. It is almost exclusively a bird of marine
habitat, and is found along the California coast from Baja to
Santa Barbara.
In the 1960's the Brown Pelican became an endangered species due
to organochloride pesticides that caused decreased egg viability
through eggshell thinning resulting in adult birds crushing their
eggs before maturity. The population has since rebounded and has
become a symbol of ecological restoration.
BUDGETARY/FINANCIAL IMPACT
There is no budget/financial impact resulting from this request.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the city Council adopt the accompanying
resolution designating the Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidental is)
as the official bird of the City of Santa Monica.
