Introduction
ThiS report recommends that the City CounCil award a contract to renovate the elevators
In Parkmg Structure Elevators Nos 3 and 4 to Amtech Elevator Services In the amount of
$575.000
Backg round
DUring the FY 1998-99 budget process, City Council approved funding to renovate the
elevators In two downtown parking structures These elevators are used extensively by
VIsitors to the Third Street Promenade and by local bUSinesses, and often break down due
to their age and wear and tear ThiS work Will reduce the frequency of need for repairs and
Will Improve the appearance of the elevators The first phase of work, currently under
construction. Included renovating the five elevators In Parking Structures Nos 5 and 6
ThiS second phase Includes renovating the five elevators In Parking Structures Nos 3 and
4 The subsequent and final phase, proposed In the 1999-00 capital budget, will Include
upgradmg the elevators In Parking Structures Nos 1 and 2

DISCUSSion
The renovation work In Phase II Includes replacmg the elevator controllers, door
mechanisms, Indicator lights and mterlor cab finishes Construction of the phase II work
IS estimated to take 270 days
A Notice Invltmg Bids to Renovate the Parkmg Structure Elevators was published on
February 25 and March 4. 1999, In The Argonaut, as well as In four construction journals
Bid documents were sent to SIX women/mmonty busmess enterpnse aSSociations (WMBE)
Bid packages were req uested by two companies, both of which submitted sealed bids to
the City Clerk's Office at the preSCribed time The bids were publicly opened and read
aloud on March 22, 1999. by the Deputy City Clerk

license Board venfled that the Contractor's license IS current, active, and In good standmg

Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council

2 Authorize the City Engineer to Issue any necessary change orders to complete
additional work with budget authonty
