SUBJECT: Resolution for Support of Santa Monica Convention
and Visitors Bureau
INTRODUCTION
This report transmits information and recommendations regarding the
Convention and Vis1tors Bureau's request for Federal and state
grants for the purpose of postquake tourism recovery.
BACKGROUND
Travel and Tourism 1S one of Santa Monica's most important economic
mainstays. More that 5,000 Los Angeles area residents including
thousands of m1norities, female heads of household, seniors and
teenagers, many of whom are citizens of Santa Monica, are dependent
on travel and tourism for thelr livelihoods.
The travel and tourism industry has been adversely affected by the
January 17 NorthridgejReseda earthquake, resulting in the closure
of two hotels totaling 350 rooms, the lmmediate loss of several
million dollars in taxable hotel room revenue, and millions in lost
retail sales. It 1S 1n the best lnterest of the greater Los
Angeles reg10n to preserve the flow 0 f tourism dollars into the
community for the purpose of generating local jobs and tax
revenues.

Late winter and spring are the critical planning seasons for summer
travel, the local market's most important tourism season. It is
imperative that creative tourism promotion efforts be made to bring
visitors back to Santa Monica, from Western Europe, the Pacific Rim
and other areas of the united States. Santa Monica's Convention
and visitors Bureau needs flnancial assistance to maintain the
integrity of the local tourism economy in light of the recent
disaster.
FISCAL/BUDGETARY IMPACT
None.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the city council support the convention and
Visitors Bureau for Federal and/or State grants for the purpose of
postquake recovery.
