FED - 8 1994 t RMD:JPM:smcvb Santa Monica, Callfornia Council Meeting: February 8, 1994 TO: Mayor and city Council FROM: City staff SUBJECT: Resolution for Support of Santa Monica Convention and Visitors Bureau INTRODUCTION This report transmits information and recommendations regarding the Convention and Vis1tors Bureau's request for Federal and state grants for the purpose of postquake tourism recovery. BACKGROUND Travel and Tourism 1S one of Santa Monica's most important economic mainstays. More that 5,000 Los Angeles area residents including thousands of m1norities, female heads of household, seniors and teenagers, many of whom are citizens of Santa Monica, are dependent on travel and tourism for thelr livelihoods. The travel and tourism industry has been adversely affected by the January 17 NorthridgejReseda earthquake, resulting in the closure of two hotels totaling 350 rooms, the lmmediate loss of several million dollars in taxable hotel room revenue, and millions in lost retail sales. It 1S 1n the best lnterest of the greater Los Angeles reg10n to preserve the flow 0 f tourism dollars into the community for the purpose of generating local jobs and tax revenues. FER - 8 199't ~-K- . Late winter and spring are the critical planning seasons for summer travel, the local market's most important tourism season. It is imperative that creative tourism promotion efforts be made to bring visitors back to Santa Monica, from Western Europe, the Pacific Rim and other areas of the united States. Santa Monica's Convention and visitors Bureau needs flnancial assistance to maintain the integrity of the local tourism economy in light of the recent disaster. FISCAL/BUDGETARY IMPACT None. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the city council support the convention and Visitors Bureau for Federal and/or State grants for the purpose of postquake recovery.
