BACKGROUND The national celebration of "CoastweeksU is from September 19 through october 12, 1992 to proclaim the beauty and importance of our nation's coasts. The City of santa Monica in concert with the santa Monica Bay Restoration projectJ Heal the Bay, the Los Angeles Department of Beaches and Harbors, and the California Coastal Commission encourages citizens of all ages to take personal responsibility for the care and protection of our beachesJ parks, waterways and communities. september 19, 1992 has been established as "Coastal Cleanup Dayll where community volunteers make a concerted effort to expand the awareness of coastal cleanup and undertake a massive drive to cleanup the beaches. In addition, on October 11, 1992, a Santa Monica Coastal Workshop will be held at 415 PCH from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A marine demonstration with a mobile touch tank exhibit from the Cabrillo - 1 - #- A- SEP - ~ :'JG? '';~ Marine Museum will be featured to educate the youth and public on marine life. Santa Monica College will do a presentation on coastal weather patterns, el nino and other related meteorological topics. The city's Solid Waste Management Office will do a presentation on reCYCling. At the end of the day there will be a Community Barbecue on the beach for the public to enjoy. FISCAL/BUDGETARY IMPACT Funding of the workshop is covered in the 415 PCH budget. No appropriation is necessary. The City of Santa Monica is strongly committed to the wise management of the coastline, and recognlzes that preserving the quality of coastal resources requires public awareness and support; and WHEREAS. The Californla Coastal Commisslon will sponsor the State-Wlde September Cleanup Day and the Clty wlshes to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of individual citlzens. environmental groups, the business community and public lnstitutions.
