from L N CurtiS & Sons
Introduction
ThiS report recommends that the City Council approve the purchase of flreflghtmg
breathing devIces for the Fire Suppression DIVIsion, Fire Department, in the total amount
of $35,592 60, Including applicable sales tax
Background
One of the Items being purchased IS a communication device that sounds an alarm to alert
others If a fIrefighter IS trapped or unconscIous The other Item IS a breathing device that
allows firefighters to share one air tank In the event of a tank malfunction or loss of air
These devices will replace nme-year old obsolete Units and are compatible with eXlstmg
breathing apparatus
The manufacturer of these devices IS Survlvalr which does not sell direct Survlvalr IS not
the only manufacturer of breathing devices, however, Survlvalr breathing tanks have been
used by the Fire Department for over sixteen years, makmg compatibility essential LN
CurtiS & Sons IS the sole dlstnbutor of Survlvalr equipment m Southern California

Ordmance Number 1743 (CCS), Section 5, paragraph 224080 (1) of the Santa Monica
MUnicipal Code allows exception to competitive biddIng when goods are purchased from a
sole provider Staff has evaluated the quote submitted by L N Curtis & Sons and finds
that It meets City specifications
