INTRODUCTION
This report recommends that the City Counc~l re~iew and approve the members of the
Commun~ty Adv~sory Commi#tee under the Ne~ghborhood Livabiliiy InitEative
BACKGROUND
At the May 12, 1998 mee#ing, Counal approved the first phase of a initiative designed to
improve cammunity quality of life m the area baunded by 14th Street to Stewart and Pico
to Olymp~c Bou~e~ards
The initiative was ~he result of a public safety coflabarative ob~ec~ive devekoped in fiscal
years 1996-98 An Interdepartmental Team met overthat period ~o discuss an outreach
approach ta enl~st meaningful community ~nvoivement It was deter~nined that a
CommunityAdvisory Committe~ would b~ an appropriate v~hrcfe to Encourage cammunity
feed~ack The team then studied neighborhaods whach might serve as a pilot area for
enhanced services and strategic improvements For a multftUde of reasar~s discussed in

the attached staff report, tl~e Pica Neighborhoad was selected
Since that time, a needs assessment survey requesting fieedback on nefghborhood
concerns was de~eloped and distnbuted to residents, businesses, service ~ro~iders and
schools in the area The survey also contained an applicatian far mernbership on a
Community Ad~isory Commiftee A tata~ of 3,922 surveys in English and Spanish were
distributed in person and ~ia maif, and 319 ar 8% were completed and retumed Of those,
122 responder~ts expressed interest in committee membership Because af the large
response, letters were sent to each requesting that they canfirm their intent #a part~cipate
Letters in Spanish were ser~# ta those who had completed the survey in Span~sh
Staff recammends that all of the 26 community members who live or work in the ~ilot area
and who confirmed their in#erest in becoming members of the cammittee, be inWited to ~om
the comm~ttee The graup mcludes residents. busmess persons, social service providers
and educators in the ptlot neighborhood They are Loretta Bryant, Rosemary Cuadras,
Jane Dawson, Katherme Demopoulos, Micf~ele Duncan, Patrick Flanagan, George
George, Kelly Greene, Dan~el Hallaf, Steven Keats, MEChelle Maximo, L~anne McPherson,
David Miller, Adarn Nathan, Linda NorrES, Richard Nortman, Nelle Pingree, Tom Rogers,

Upon Co~ncil acceptance of the comm~ttee members, a series of ineetings w~f! b~ held at
which committee members will rev~ew s~rv~y results and develop immediate and long term

actians to address identified needs Members will work with City department
repres~ntati~es, examinmg the services and programs avadable from the City and other
tn~rolved agencies to meet the needs
