DISCUSSION The Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) would like to support the efforts of three organizations (Drive By Agony, The VIOlence Prevention CoalitIOn of Los Angeles County, and Women Agarnst Gun VIolence) who are JOintly sponsoring a march and demonstration named "Honor the VictIms, Empower the SurVivors, Stop the Violence Now'" ThiS event IS In recognition of the increasing level of violence, including gun homicides, domestic Violence, and youth Violence. On Sunday, Apnl 23, 1995, participants Will meet at the Olvera Street Plaza In Los Angeles begmnlng at 11 :30 a m. and at 1 :00 p m Will march to the Hall of Administration. By proclaiming Sunday, April 23, 1995, as a "Day Without Violence" In the City of Santa MOnica, the CIty WI" Increase publIC awareness and assIst efforts to educate people to think about Violence as a publiC health Issue that reqUires strategIes for ~"I PR J 1 1995 prevention BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT The recommendation contained In the report does not have any financial or budget Impacts. T RESOLUTION NUMBER 8887 (CCS) (City CouncIl Senes) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA PROCLAIMING APRIL 23, 1995, AS A "DAY WITHOUT VIOLENCE" IN THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA WHEREAS, on Sunday, April 23, 1995, Drive By Agony, the Violence Prevention Coalition of Los Angeles County, and Women Against Gun VIolence, a project of the American Jewish Congress, are JOintly sponsoring a march and demonstration named, "HONOR THE VICTIMS, EMPOWER THE SURVIVORS; STOP THE VIOLENCE NOW;" and WHEREAS,thls event IS deSigned to Increase awareness and offer prevention techniques for Violent crimes In our communities, as well as provldmg assistance to victims of these crrmes, and WHEREAS, the goal IS to organize hundreds of Los Angeles area organizations, representmg thousands of mdlvlduals, to change the way people think about guns and to educate students and adults to see Violence as a public health Issue that reqUires strategies for preventIon, and new ways of thinking about control of lethal weapons; and WHEREAS, the members of the Santa MOnica CommissIon on the Status of Women actively support this effort and Jam the City of Santa MOnica In declanng April 23, 1995, as a "DAY WITHOUT VIOLENCE," 6- \ NOW, THEREFORE THE CITY COUNCIL FOR THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS.
