IntroductIon
ThIs report recommends that the City Council adopt a resolutIon declaring the week of
October 6 -10,1997, as CalIfornia Rldeshare Week In the City of Santa Momca to support
and encourage reSidents, employers and employees to use alternative means of
transportation
DIScussion
The City of Santa MOnica has been an active developer of and participant In many
programs to encourage and support the use of alternative commute modes, Including
carpoolIng, vanpoohng, takIng tranSit, bicyclIng, walking, and telecommuting to help reduce
air pollution and traffic congestion This year marks the twelfth year that the State of
California has sponsored California Rldeshare Week with the cooperation and
partiCipation of regional and local government agencies and private employers, and the
eighth year of the City's own successful employee commute reduction program Over the
last eight years, the City of Santa Monica has participated In the actIVIties and promotIons
for California Rldeshare Week The objective of the week IS to draw attention to alternative

commute modes for residents and workers In the City of Santa Monica as part of the
Statewide effort Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the attached resolution to
mark the City's support of and participation In thIs year's California Rldeshare Week

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF mE CITY OF
SANTA MONICA DECLARING OCTOBER 6 - 10, 1997
CALIFORNIA RIDESHARE WEEK IN THE OTY OF SANTA MONICA
WHEREAS, thousands of commuters throughout California will be trying an alternative
commute as part of the twelfth annual California Rideshare Week, and
WHEREAS, this stateWIde campaign promotes carpooling, vanpooling, taking transit,
bicycling, walking, and telecommuting as methods that help reduce auto traffic and air pollution,
and
WHEREAS, Southern California Association of Government's rideshare services is
working with employers and community organizations throughout OUf region to organize events
that help commuters glve rideshare to work a try, and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica supports the California Rideshare Week campaign
and urges all residents to try an alternative method of transportation at least once during the
week,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCn.. OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES HEREBY RESOL VB AS FOLLOWS'
SECTION 1. The City Councll of the City of Santa Monica declares the week of 0,
