Background In 1991, the City received a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration in the amount of $2,500,000 to repair and overlay the runway at the Airport. Santa Monica Municipal Airport runway was originally constructed in 1942 and is made of Portland Cement Concrete. Over the past several years, the City has received an increasing number of complaints about the roughness of the runway. The ride quality (roughness) of the surface was evaluated using the California Profilograph Method which measures irregularities of a surface. The results showed that the roughness of the runway exceeded the maximum acceptable level for runways. The project consists of a new asphalt surface overlayed on the existing concrete surface and will take 4 months to complete. The airport will be closed for two 4 day periods during the - 1 - 6-N '1 ,",~"r -.F ~...... ~aving operation. This project was designed by Hodges and Shutt, I airport runway experts, who will also provide construction inspection and management for the project.
