SR-6-F (40) , , 6-F M~D ~ ~iJU I ':~" v L-~I,,- CARS:BFM:CAC:s1f Santa Monica, California council Meeting, March 3, 1992 STAFF REPORT TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: City staff SUBJECT: RECOMMENDATION FOR CITY COUNCIL TO WAIVE RENTAL AND PARKING FEES FOR USE OF THE SANTA MONICA CIVIC AUDITORIUM FROM DECEMBER 15-17, 1992 FOR THE "WESTSIDE HOMELESS VETERANS FAIR 1992" INTRODUCTION This is to recommend that the City Council waive rental and parking fees for the use of the Santa Monica civic by the Veterans Administration for December 15-17, 1992 for the "Westside Homeless Veterans Fair 1992." DISCUSSION In July of 1991 the Vietnam Veterans of America, Westside Chapter, with a coalition of governmental, veteran, charitable and private agencies combined to produce the UHomeless Veterans Stand Down" at the Santa Monica civic. Veterans received food, shelter, clothing, medical and legal assistance, as well as, counseling in the areas of job readiness, drug and alcohol treatment. In 1991, Council waived rental and parking fees. The Veterans group paid for labor and equipment fees. This year the Department of Veterans Affairs will coordinate the "Wests ide Homeless Veterans Fair 1992. " The program will operate during the day and transportation will be offered to move veterans 6-F Mt: -, 1')92 ! 1"1-\ -J ~ ; to nearby programs and cold weather shelters in the evenings. It will be a two day event with one set-up day. The Fair will emphasize employment, short-and long-term affordable housing, medical and legal assistance, veteran and social security benefits and substance abuse treatment. Labor and equipment costs will be paid by the Veterans Foundation, Inc. City staff has determined that the civic Auditorium is available on the dates requested. The value of the waived rental is $7,500 and parking is estimated at $900. RECOMMENDATION It is requested that the City Council waive the rental and parking fees associated with the use of the Santa Monica Civic AUditorium for the "Westside Homeless Veterans Fair 1992" scheduled from December 15-17, 1992.
