Introduction City Council requested staff to formally agendize provision of a $10,000 grant to the Santa Monica High School Symphony as a contribution to their fundraising efforts to attend the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria in July 1992. Background The Santa Monica High School Symphony requested City Council financial assistance so that their musicians can attend the upcoming International Youth and Music Festival. The High School Symphony has planned a number of fundraising activities, business and foundation appeal s , and parent support. City Council expressed interest in contributing $10,000 to these efforts to be funded from the City Council contingency account. Council also requested that staff explore the feasibility of assistance with a fundraising concert to be held in May in conjunction with a Santa Monica Symphony fundraiser. Staff has learned that the High School Symphony and Santa Monica Symphony have had only preliminary discussions about producing a joint concert at the Santa Monica civic. Overall, the City's $10,000 contribution should be viewed as a maximum commitment provided that additional funds are secured. It is expected that the full amount of the funds will be returned if the trip is not undertaken. Budget Impact $10,000 is available from the city council continqency Account 01-700-274-00000-7785-00000. Recommendation It is recommended that City council confirm their previous indication to provide a $10,000 contribution to the Santa Monica High School Symphony fundraising efforts to attend the 21st International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria.
