Approval of New Classification specification and
Resolution Setting Salaries for the Permanent Clas-
sification of Recreation Center Director and the As
Needed Classifications of Recreation Leader and Recre-
ation specialist
Introduction
This report requests approval of a new classification specifica-
tion for Recreation Center Director and a Salary Resolution set-
ting the salary rates for the new classification and for the as
needed classifications of Recreation Leader and Recreation
Specialist.
Background
Recreation Leader is a classification which has long been used to
cover one permanent position in the Recreation Division. In ad-
dition, however, Recreation Leader has been used as the major "as
needed" classification used by the Division for the hiring of
short-term temporary employees, especially during the summer
months. The new classification specification for Recreation Cen-
ter Director is intended to cover the single budgeted position,
with Recreation Leader recommended to serve as an as needed clas-
sification only. Approval of the new classification specifica-
tion (approved by the Personnel Board on February 23, 1987) and
the attached Salary Resolution will achieve both objectives.

JUN 23 1981
Recreation Specialist was used to cover a single budgeted posi-
tion until Fiscal Year 1986-1987, when the position was elimi-
nated from the budget. The classification is now used solely for
the hiring of as needed employees. The intent of the attached
Salary Resolution is to clarify that the classification of Recre-
ation Specialist is to be used only for as needed appointments.
Fiscal Impact
Funds are already included in the budget for Fiscal Year 1987-
1988 to cover all salary costs related to the hiring of a perma-
nent Recreation Center Director, as well as all salary costs as-
sociated with the hiring of as needed Recreation Leaders and as
needed Recreation Specialists.
Recommendation
It is recommended that council approve the new classification of
Recreation Center Director, and adopt the attached Resolution
establishing the salary rate for the new classification, as well
as the as needed salary rates for Recreation Leader and Recre-
ation Specialist.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SANTA MONICA ADOPTING SALARY RATE
FOR THE PERMANENT CLASSIFICATION OF RECREATION CENTER
DIRECTOR AND AS NEEDED SALARY RATES FOR THE CLASSIFICATIONS
OF RECREATION LEADER AND RECREATION SPECIALIST
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS
FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The following monthly salary level is hereby
established for the indicated permanent classifications,
effective June 17, 1987:
RECREATION CENTER
DIRECTOR
$1174/Month E-Step
($1256/Month with PERS)
SECTION 2. The following hourly salary levels are hereby
established for the indicated "as needed" classifications,
effective June 17, 1987:
RECREATION LEADER
$5.49 - $6.77/Hr. (5 Steps)
RECREATION SPECIALIST
$6.93 - $8.56/Hr. (5 steps)
SECTION 3. The city Clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be
in full force and effect.
