City Council Meeting:
Santa Monica, California
February 14, 1989
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: City staff
SUBJECT: Recommendation to Approve Alternate Parade Route
INTRODUCTION
This year, the Santa Monica Fire Department will be celebrating
it's loath Anniversary.
In honor of this, a series of events
that will be held over an eight month period are being planned.
Among these events is a centennial Parade complete with antique
and unusual firefighting equipment and apparatus, floats and
marching bands. As the requested parade route differs from the
City's official parade route, City staff recommends that city
Council approve the alternate parade route as requested.
DISCUSSION
At the July 26, 1988, the Santa Monica Firefighters Centennial
committee met with the city's Event Management Team, which
consists of representatives from City Manager, Transportation,
Police, Fire, General services, Community & Economic Development,
and Cultural and Recreational Services, and submitted a request
to conduct a parade on Sunday, October I, 1989 at 1:00 p.m. The
requested staging area is on Marguerita and Alta Avenues between
Ocean Avenue and 4th street, with the parade proceeding south on
Ocean Avenue to Colorado, east on Colorado to Main street and
south on Main to the Civic Center parking lot. Per section 4241
~;:I?
.
.
FD:TCT:CC:CT:ajs
city Council Meeting:
Santa Monica, California
February 14, 1989
of the Santa Monica Municipal Code, the City's official parade
route is Ocean Avenue, between the northwest City limits and
Colorado Avenue. The deviation from the official route will be
east on Colorado Avenue to Main street, and south on Main Street
to the civic Center parking lot (see attached map). Due to the
size of the parade and the number of participants, it is
requested that the Civic Center parking lot be utilized for
disbursement of parade units as well as providing lunch to
participants.
Specific information will be provided to the City Council
regarding the centennial Parade as plans progress.
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
There is no bUdget/financial impact.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that City council approve the Firefighters'
Centennial Committee's request to hold a Centennial Parade on
October I, 1989 on the specified alternate route.
