General Servlces Employee Recognitlon Awards
Introduction
Th1S report recommends that the C1ty Council make awards to three
General Serv1cesJ employees who have been selected for spec1al
recogn1t1on by the1r peers.
Background
The General Serv1ces Department establ1shed a program three years
ago to recogn1ze our outstand1ng employees. The program has tried
to recogn1ze those who meet the follow1ng cr1teria:
Outstanding Job performance
W1llingness to put forth extra effort to get a Job done
Contr1but1on of an ldea that has 1mproved work methods,
safety or appearance
Any other character1st1c Wh1Ch reflects a posit1ve
attitude towards working with the City.
Ind1viduals are nom1nated by the1r superv1sor and an Evaluat10n
Commlttee makes the selectlon. The Committee 1S compr1sed of Rlta

The three employees who are recommended to receive an award are:
Manuel Carrillo, Sanitation Truck Drlver
Manuel was drlvlng a refuse packer when he experlenced sudden
brake fallure and he - wlthout hesltatlon - chose to leave
the road rather than strlke passengers vehicles that were on
the road. Manuel1s prompt action avoided possible lnJuries
as well as damages to property.
Pamela Brown, Painter Apprentlce.
Pam JOlned the Clty ln July 28, 1982 - the flrst woman ever
In Clty hlstory to enter the bUlldlng trades. Prlor to her
appolntment as Palnter Apprentlce, Pam worked 18 months as
Laborer I galnlng valuable experlence from Journey level
palnters and attainlng good Skllls in her own rlght as well
as completlng courses at LA Trade Tech ln such courses as
palntlng,
estlmatlng,
bluepnnts
and
wood (funlture)
reflnlshing. She lS a welcome addltlon to the PFM staff.

In addltlon to Mlke's outstanding Job performance ln maklng
sure that all of the Clty'S Communlcation Systems are
functlonlng
at
maXlmum effectlveness and contrlbutlng
lnnovatlve ldeas on hlS own lnltlatlve regardlng various City
communlcatlon and electrlcal systems, he recently asslsted
the Police ln apprehendlng a felony hlt-and-run drlver. On
hlS way home from work Mlke heard the descriptlon of the
hlt-and-run drlver on his pollee radio.
He followed the
suspect and eventually was able to coordinate wlth the Pollce

Department to apprehend the suspect. Agaln, this was on hlS
own tlme and he chose to "get 1nvolved".
Recommendat1ons
It 15 recommended that the C1ty Councll award a certiflcate as
outstanding employee to Manuel Carrillo, Pamela Brown and Mlchael
DerrlCo.
