SUBJECT: Street Tree Planting on Santa Monica Boulevard
from 17th Street to 20th Street T-79-5(SM)
Introduction
This report recommends that the City Council approve the attached Resolutlon
of Intent10n for planting trees on Santa Monlca Boulevard from 17th Street
to 20th Street.
Background.
The City Council, at their meeting on January 23~ 1979, authorized the City
Staff to proceed on a tree planting program on Santa Monica Blvd. in several
separate assessment distrlcts 1n accordance wit~ Chapter 27 of the Improvement
Act of 1911. The portion of Santa Monlca Blvd. from 17th Street to 20th Street

is the fifth of the districts. Planting in the sections between 5th Street
and 17th Street is in progress now.

The City will do the planting and participate in the cost with Gas Tax Funds.
The estimated assessment cost to the abutting property owners is $1.75 per
front foot.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Coune,l adopt the attached Resolutlon of
Intention WhlCh sets a public hearing for November 13) 1979.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SANTA MONICA DECLARING ITS INTENTION TO PLANT TREES
ALONG SANTA MONICA BOULEVARD BETWEEN 17TH STREET AND
20TH STREET WITHIN THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Santa Monica is
empowered by Section 5870) et seq., of the Streets and Highways Code of
the State of California to plant trees at various locations wlthin the
City of Santa Monica;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That the public interest requires and it is the
intention of the City Council of the City of Santa Monica to order the
following work to be done. to wit: The planting of trees along Santa Monica
Boulevard from 17th Street to 20th Street all in the Clty of Santa Monica.
The estlmated assessment cost of the improvement is $1.75 per front foot to
the abutting property owners and the balance of the cost is to be borne by
the City.
SECTION 2. That sald proposed work or improvement, in the opinion
of the City Council of the Clty of Santa Monlca, is of more than local or
ordinary public benefit, and said Council hereby proposes that the district
in the City of Santa Monica to be benefitted by said work or improvement and
to be assessed to pay the cost and expense thereof includes all of the property
abutting Santa r10nica Boulevard between 17th Street and 20th Street.
SECTION 3. Notice hereby is given pursuant to said Section 5870
et seq. that on November 13, 1979, at the hour of 7:30 p.m. ln the Council
Chambers of the City Hall of said City of Santa Monica, situated at 1685 Main
Street in said City, any and all persons having any Objections to the proposed

work or improvement may appear before the City Counel1 and show cause why
the said proposed work or lmprovement should not be carried out in accordance
with said Resolution of Intention.
SECTION 4. The Superlntendent of Streets immediately shall
cause to be conspicuously posted along the line of said contemplated improve-
ment notice of the passage of this Resolution of Intention in the manner and
form prescribed by law.
The City Clerk hereby is directed to mail notices, in the manner
and form prescribed by law, of the adoptlon of this resolution to all persons
owning real property in the hereinbefore described assessment dlstrict, whose
names and addresses appear on the last equallzed assessment roll for city
taxes or as known to the City Clerk.
SECTION 5. The City C1erk sha1l certify to the adoption of thlS
resolution and thenceforth and thereafter the same sha11 be in full force
and effect.
