Addition of Transportation Planner position and
Adoption of Resolution Establishing Salary
INTRODUCTION
This report requests approval of a Transportation Planner
position in the Land Use and Transportation Management Department
and adoption of the attached resolution establishing the salary
rate.
BACKGROUND
In an October information item, the Council was informed about
the reorganization of several functions within the city to
enhance service delivery in the area of planning and development.
One particular area of emphasis was traffic and transportation
planning which has now been placed within a single department.
The new classification specification of Transportation Planner
was approved by the Personnel Board in November, 1990. The
Transportation Planner position will serve a coordinating role
between the Parking and Traffic and Planning Divisions of the
Land Use and Transportation Management Department.
Both
divisions share in the responsibility of transportation planning.
The Transportation Planner will link technical traffic analysis
with long range land use and transportation planning.

The work assignedllb this position will inc~e: short and long
range policy guidance on transportation studies; preparation of
written reports on various environmental impact reports and
transportation planning and policy matters; review and
preparation of traffic impact studies; and research and analysis
on other transportation management plans and policies. In
addition, this position will assist with the coordination of
light rail transportation projects in the city.
The Transportation Planner will need the journey level skills of
an Associate Planner, but will also need to understand the
technical aspects of transportation planning, (i.e., engineering,
technical methodologies, etc.). Recognizing the need for these
special skills, the salary for this pos i tion is set above the
Associate Planner salary.
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
Any necessary budget adjustments will be made at the end of the
fiscal year.
RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommended that the City Council approve the position of
Transportation Planner and adopt the attached salary resolution
establishing the new salary rate for this position
classification.

CITY OF SANTA MONICA ADOPTING A SALARY RATE
FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF
TRANSPORTATION PLANNER
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES
RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION l: The following monthly salary level
is hereby established for the indicated permanent classification,
effective DECEMBER 12, 1990.
