SUBJECT: Ca11forn1a L1teracy Campaiqn Grant
INTRODUCTION
Th1S report asks Council for add1tlonal appropriatlon authorlty
1n the General fund, Account #01-410-614-601-401 1n the amount of
$3,000 so the Llbrary may particlpate in the Callfornla Llteracy
Campalgn. The appropr~atlon w~ll be f~nanced by $3,000 ln
revenue from the Californla State Llbrary at Account
#20-932-371-000-000 deslgnated for purchase of L~brary materlals
about the problem of adult ll1lteracy.
BACKGROUND
The Callfornla Llteracy Campa~gn was establ~shed two years ago
under the Californ~a L~brary Serv~ces Act In order to lnvolve
Callforn1a publ~c llhrarles ln an effort to combat the functlonal
11lteracy WhlCh handicaps an estlmated 2.5 ffillllon adults in the
state. The grants for 1985 are belng made available to publlC
11brarles, based on populatlon, to develop a collectlon of prlnt
and non-prlnt materlals that wlll ralse awareness in thelr local
communltles about the problem and ways in WhlCh lt may be
combated.

In addlt~on to the approprlatlon changes already ldentlfled, the
fol1ow~ng techn~cal approprlatlons are necessary to transfer
these funds from the mlscellaneous Grants Fund to the General
Fund: $(3,000) at 01-700-695-601-401 and $3,000 at
20-700-695-601-401
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that Counc~l approve $3,000 of approprlatlon
authorlty at Account #01-410-614-601-401, establ1sh revenue
Account #20-932-371-000-000 ~n the amount of $3,000, and approve
technlcal appropr~atlon changes of $(3,000) at 01-700-695-601-401
and $3,000 at 20-700-695-601-401.
