Coordinating the two services has increased transportation units of service by an average of 15% and eliminated the need for two dispatchers, and two base stations. Coordination has alBo encouraged organized and regularly scheduled maintenance inspections and more effective preventive paintenance procedures. . AB 120 (Statute, 1979) of the Social Services Transportation Improvement Act mandates consolidated transportation service through coordinating councils or brokerage mechanism by July, 1982. The Santa Monica Bestside Volunteer Bureau proposes to utilize funds presently available through the State of California Department of Transportation to begin development of a transporta- tion program that will be in compliance with that mandate. The requested addition of two vans with wheelcha~r lift~ will enable us to transport nine handicapped seniors at the same time. so that it will be possible to accept reservations from the elderly handicapped without distinction. The need for increased transportation for the handicapped of all age groups is indisputable. WelL presently finds it necessary to dec11ne at least 40 requests monthly. Combined, two additional vehicles w111 prav1de an average of 750 more units of transportation service monthly.
