SUBJECT: Grant Award for Purchase of Children1s Books
INTRODUCTION
This report asks council for additional appropriation authority
in the General fund, Account #01-410-614-202-404 in the amount of
$10,000 so that the Library may participate in the Children's
Materials Collection Development in Urban Areas program. The
appropriation will be financed by $10,000 in revenue from
Title I, Library Services and Construction Act, Account
#20-932-355-000-000 designated for purchase of children's library
materials for the Fairview and Ocean Park Branch Libraries.
BACKGROUND
The Children's Materials Collection Development in Urban Areas
program is being administered by the california state Library in
order to provide children's library materials to libraries
serving "disadvantaged, racially or culturally mixed populations,
and/or limited English-speaking persons". The Library applied
for funds for its two branch libraries, Fairview and Ocean Park,
which provide service to populations meeting these criteria. The
state Library has made grant awards of $5,000 for each branch.

The Library shall be responsible for the submission of quarterly
progress reports on the progress and activities of the project to
the state Library. The money must be spent no later than
September 30, 1988.
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
In addition to the appropriation changes already identified, the
following technical appropriations are necessary to transfer
these funds from the miscellaneous Grants Fund to the General
Fund: $($10,000) at 01-700-695-000-714 and $10,000 at
20-700-695-000-7l4.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that council approve $10,000 of appropriation
authority at Account #01-410-614-202-404, establish revenue
Account #20-932-355-000-000 in the amount of $10,000, and approve
technical appropriation changes of $(10,000) at
01-700-695-000-714 and $10,000 at 20-700-695-000-714.
