SUBJECT. City Hall Lobby Alteration
Introduction
This report provides information regarding alteration
to the Information Booth area in the City Hall Lobby.
Backgrou!ld
The lobby area of City Hall includes a small enclosure which
historically housed the switchboard
The City Hall
telephone operator pl:&vided information to citizens ,...:rho
sought assistance
Since the new communicatlons center
opened, the enclosure has not been consistantly staffed.
Last summer the CETA Summer Youth Program staff used
the area and recently the Rent Control collections
function has been housed there
In the absence of paid
City Staff in the lobby, the lndividual at the voter
registration table ~2~ served as an unpaid and unofficial
Information source.
The proposed alteration would provide an entry to the
booth from the Personnel Offices
This opening would
provide the means for effective supervision of one or
more
clerical staff who would assume full-time
~nformation/reception and collection functlons
It is
anticipated that over a period of time, the lobby en-
closure would provide the public with a convenient one
stop locatlon for general information and directions,

employment information and job applications, payment of
a variety of City fees, purchase of Bus tokens and other
services which could be conven~ently performed from that
area.
It is anticipated that centralization of these functions
in the lobby would substant~ally reduce public traffic
in the work areas of City Hall and eliminate some
duplication of effort in collection functions. The
staffing of this area will be accomplished with employees
from several departments
No additional personnel will
be required at this time.
The entrance to Personnel will require removal of a
sect~on of the decorative tile at the rear of the enclosure
The contractor has been cautioned to minimize the number of
tiles removed and those tiles will be preserved for
replacement of others which may from time to t~me be damaged
or defaced
Cost of entry to the Personnel spaces is est~rnated
not to exceed $2500. This will be funded from Account
#243-322-City Hall Building/Structures !1aintenance
Recommendation
It is recommended that City Council author~ze the City
Manager to proceed with the alteration and establish an
information and service booth function.
