City Council Meeting 2/28/89
Santa Monica, California
STAFF REPORT
TO:
Mayor and City Council
FROM:
city Staff
SUBJECT:
FIREWORKS DISPLAY DATE CHANGE
INTRODUCTION
This report requests that the City council approve date changes
for the Santa Monica Pier Lessees Association fireworks shows
originally approved for February 4, 11, and 18, 1989.
BACKGROUND
At its regularly scheduled meeting of January 24, 1989, the City
council approved a request by the Santa Monica pier Lessees
Association to conduct fireworks on Friday February 4, 11, and
18, 1989. Due to bad weather, the original dates were canceled.
The Santa Monica pier Lessees Association would like to request
date changes to saturday, March 11, 18, and 25, 1989, with each
display starting at 6:30 P.M.
DISCUSSION
The pier Lessees Association has contracted with Pyro Spectacular
to produce the shows. Each show would consist of approximately
150 - 200 shells (by contrast, "Dawn's Early Light" contained

1,500 shells}.
The duration of each individual show would be
approximately 15 minutes.
The cost of the three shows would be the same:
promotion
TOTAL
$ 6,000
$ 7,500
$13,500
Fireworks
The Pier Restoration Corporation continues to fully endorse this
program. The SMPLA has budgeted for this event. As previously
negotiated, 50% of the funding is provided by the City as its
standard match to the dues paid and collected.
The programs submitted by the fireworks company contain smaller
sized and fewer shells which should provide a less noisy show
than usually associated with fireworks.
A stand-by fire fighter will be on duty for all three shows. The
cost is included in the promotion costs.
RECOMMENDATIONS
staff recommends that the City Council approve the firework
display on the dates requested by the Santa Monica pier Lessees
Association.
