Following a dlScusslon of Mrs. Aronoff's report, the Library Board voted
to send a resolution to the Clty Council, expressing the members' concern
about the safety of the Branch building and call1ng for improvements to be
made The attached resolution was discussed and passed by the Board at lts
regular meetlng of February 23, 1983.
FinanClal Impact
The total renovatlon cost of the proJect 1S estimated at $820,000. The Cap-
ltal Improvements Projects Co~mlttee 1S presently revlewlng thlS matter for
conslderatlon during the fiscal year 1983-84 budget. The Committee 1S con-
sldering the use of redevelopment tax lncrement funds as well as other fundlng
sources for this purpose.
Recommendatlon
It 1S recommended that the Clty Council recelve the Llbrary Board's resolution
and dlrect the staff to report to the Clty Council durlng the budget study
sess lOns.

A RESOLUTION OF THE SANTA MONICA PUBLIC
LIBRARY BOARD PERTAINING TO THE SAFETY
OF THE OCEAN PARK BRANCH LIBRARY
WHEREAS, The Santa Monica Public Library Board is charged with the
administration of the Library, and
WHEREAS, its responsibilitles include the "administration, government,
and protection of the City Llbrary"; and
WHEREAS, two architectural studles of the Ocean Park Branch Library
structure undertaken at City expense have determlned that the
structure fails to comply with building code requirements for
seismic safety; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Santa Monlca Publlc Library Board officlally expresses
its concern for the safety of the users and staff of the Ocean
Park Branch Library; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Library Board respectfully requests the Santa Monica
City Council to assign a high priority to the refurbishment of
the Ocean Park Branch Library structure for seismic safety and
other improvements that will enhance its serviceability as a com-
munity library.
ADOPTED by the Santa Monica Public Library Board of the Santa Monica
PubllC Library this 23rd day of February, 1983.
