for Funds for the Main Library Slide Archive Project

INTRODUCTION
This report recommends the city council authorize the city
Manager to apply for funds for the Main Library Slide Archive
Project from the National Historical Publications and Records
commission.
BACKGROUND
The Library is seeking a grant for a project that will add 35mm
slide transparencies of contemporary architecture to the
Library's collection of historical photographs and slides. We
have recently acquired a slide collection of the Santa Monica
area (pier, buildings, Palisades Park, etc.) dating from the late
1950's through the early 1960's that will update our historical
photograph collection which covers the years 1875 through 1950.
The grant will make possible the creation of a collection of
images of buildings which have been built since the 1960's.

The slide collection will be made available to researchers and
Library patrons in the form of duplicate transparencies to
prevent damage to the originals through handling. In addition,
the Library will produce a catalog of the architecture collection
that will be illustrated by images in the collection. The
project will be coordinated by a member of the Library's
Reference Department staff who has been designated the Image
Archives Librarian.
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
The Library will support the project by providing the Archives
Librarian's time and the materials required for proper archival
storage. Funding from the National Historical Publications and
Records Commission is sought for the additional financial
requirements of the project which include: film and processing
expenses, slide duplication costs, and the costs of producing the
catalog. These costs are estimated at $15,000.
RECOMMENDATION
city Staff recommends that the city Council authorize the city
Manager to apply to the National Historical Publications and
Records Program for a grant totaling $15,000 for the Main Library
Slide Archive Project.
