ThlS 1S a report on the use of the Maln LlbraD' on Sundays.

In June 1977, the Clty CounCl1 approved an addltlon of S23,111
to the 1lbrary's budget for the openlng of the Haln L1brary on
Sunday afternoons durlng the school year.
The approval was on a
trial basls, wlth the Clty Llbrarlan to report back to the CounCl1
wlthln the flrst SlX months.
The statlstlcs used ln thlS report were gathered from Sept em-
ber 18, 1977, the flrst day of the service, through January 1978.

It appears that Sunday use of the 11brary 15 stead11y lncreas-
ing, as more people become aware of Sunday service.
The statlstlCS
(Flg. 1) show that total use of Ilbrary materlals and services grew
from an average of 790 per Sunday ln September to 1,331 per Sunday
ln January.
November showed even more use, 1,487 per Sunday, while
December, tradltlonally a slo~ month, showed less, 1,002 per Sunday.
Students make up a good part of Sunday patrons, as lndlcated by
the use of perlodlcal backfiles, from 49 per Sunday to 146 per Sun-
day.
Famll1es are also Sunday regulars.
Many tlmes children come
wlth a parent who cannot come to the 11brary any other day. The
staff has recelved many expresslons of appreclatlon for Sunday serVlce.
