Recommendation to reject bid for rebuilding and refurbishing trucks. Bid No. 1296 Introduction This report concerns the rejection of the one (1) bid received to rebuild and refurbish three (3) refuse truck chassis with tilt cabs. This is a pilot project to ascertain the feasibility of rebuilding existing trucks in lieu of purchasing three (3) new trucks budgeted in account 01-500-441-000-950, Refuse Collection and Disposal Capital Outlay. Background This rebuilding/refurbishing consists of replacing cabs, wiring, instruments, suspension bushings and other assemblies which deterio- rate due to age or normal use. Diesel engines, transmissions, differentials and major suspension elements are not replaced. This type of program has been accepted by the commercial trucking industry since overall costs generally are less than half of comparable new truck prices. In response to published notice inviting bids to rebuild and re- furbish three (3) Ford 1970 trucks, one (1) bid was received and publicly opened and read in the office of the City Manager August 4, 1977. Proposal forms were mailed to ten (10) truck dealerships considered capable of this work and notices were advertised in accordance with city charter and municipal code provisions.
