SR-6-H (10) ~ . G,-H - 2P5 -tOo?-- FEB 1 0 1981 PU:EOB:laj Santa Monica, California Council Meeting February 10, 1987 TO: Mayor and city council FROM: city staff SUBJECT: Retirement and Disposition of Police Service Dog Introduction This report concerns the Retirement of Enno, a Police Service Dog who has given three and one half years of distinguished service to the City of Santa Monica. Background Approximately four years ago, the city of Santa Monica purchased a police service dog named Enno and recently assigned Officer Larry Horn as handler. During their tour of duty Officer Horn and Enno have distinguished themselves as an outstanding Police Canine Team. They have participated in numerous felony arrests, received several commendations from various law enforcement agen- cies, and have saved the City countless man-hours in building and area searches. In 1985, both Enno and Officer Horn were severely injured in a traffic accident while pursuing burglary suspects. Injuries resulting from this accident, combined with Enno's advanced age (8 years), necessitate his retirement from police service. Enno suffered damage to his hips and internal organs. As a result, in spite of a great deal of effort in retraining, it is clear that he is no longer able to function in a safe and efficient manner. &'-H FEB 1 0 1987 - 1 - '-"- ' . . . Recommendation In view of Enno's medical condition and his record of excellent service to the city of Santa Monica, it is recommended that Enno be sold to Officer Horn for the sum of one dollar.
