SUBJECT' Recommendation to extend maintenance agreement with
Motorola Co~unications and Electronics, Inc.
Introduction
This report concerns extension of maintenance agreement for Bus
Radio System in the total amount of $19,236 00 including apolicable
sales tax. Funds for this purchase have been budgeted in
account number 00157-000.
Background
Research by staff has determined that it would be advantageous to
the City to extend the existing agreement with Motorola Communications
and Electronics, Inc. for one year for the follow;ng reasons.
1. Despite an increase in labor and material costs, ~otorola
Communications and Electronics Inc. is willing to extend
the existing contract for on~ year at no increase in cost.
2. ~otorola has four authorized Franchised dealers in Los
Angeles and Orange County. Contact with these dealers has
revealed that none of them are willing to bid, be-
cause they are not equipped or staffed to service a
communication system !lon site" in accordance with the Citvs'
requirements, they are not willing or capable of competing
economically with the I'Parent!l company, or they are t,,1i11ing
to jeopardize their !lFranchise" by bidding against an existinr;
contract held by ~otoro1a.
As a result, Staff considers this to be a Proprietary Procurement
and further bid solicitation would cause unecessary expense and
delay.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Manager be authorized to extend
the existing maintenance contract with Motorola Communications and
Electronics, Inc. in the amount of $19,236.00 effective Janaury
1, 1981 through December 31, 1981.

OF SANTA MONICA WAIVING FURTHER FOID1AL BID P~OCEDURE
AND AUTHORIZING DIRECT NEGOTIATION FOR EXTENSION
OF ~~INTENANCE AGREE}ffiNT WITH MOTOROLA CO~frroNICATIONS
AND ELECTRONICS, INC.
'~EREAS, the City of Santa Monica Transportation Department
has a require~ent for a Maintenance Contract for the Bus Radio
System
l{HEREAS, the current vendor has offered to extend the
~
existing agreement for one year at no increase in cost.
NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That the City Council finds that the requirement
exists to provide the Transportation Department with a Bus Radio
Maintenance Agreement.
SECTION 2. That further bid solicitation would cause un-
necessary expense and delay.
SECTION 3. That the City Manager be authorized to extend
the existing maintenance agreement for a period of one year at
no increase in cost.
SECTION 4. The City clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall
be in full force and effect.
